BloodSource presented abstracts of four studies showing results from Northern California hospitals participating in their BloodSmart™ program.

  • “An Active Blood Management Program is Associated with a Very Low Regional Transfusion Rate of 31 RBC Transfusions per 1000 Population,” identifies stellar results by combining evidence-based and interdisciplinary consultative services regarding blood inventory management, appropriate blood utilization and avoidance of unnecessary transfusions.
  • “Eliminating Unnecessary Washing of Red Blood Cell Units,” reports a nearly 90% reduction in usage due to implementation of processes identified through specific blood center-hospital collaboration.
  • “A Formalized Blood Management Program (BMP) Results in Better Patient Care and More Efficient Utilization of Resources,” shows that having a readily identifiable program supported by transfusion medicine experts leads to increased customer satisfaction, enhanced workflow efficiencies, better overall utilization of resources and improved patient care.
  • “Specially Selected Single Donor Plateletpheresis (SS-SDP) Units Lead to Better Patient Care and Blood Utilization” shows that a large Apheresis Platelet Donor (APD) population, along with specialized HLA and Immunohematology Reference Laboratory testing services, is needed to support patients with unique transfusion needs.
