Lieta M. Maffei, MBA, MT(ASCP)SBB, FACHE, FHIMSS— Principal, Maffei Healthcare Management Consulting (San Diego, Calif.)

Lieta Maffei brings more than 35 years of healthcare experience in blood bank operations, quality improvement and compliance to Nouvation customers. She also has a long history of service to the American Association of Blood Banks, first managing technical programs and later as an AABB assessor. Most recently, after several years as national director of regulatory affairs & quality assurance at HemaCare Corporation (Woodland Hills, Calif.), Lieta spent 10 years as the San Diego Blood Bank’s director of quality assurance and compliance. Earlier, as Templin Management Associates’ western region director, she helped hospital laboratories with process improvement for more than a decade.

Lieta began her career in hospital blood banks and laboratories, first as a De Anza (College) Clinical Laboratory (San Diego) medical technologist, then as a senior medtech at Donald N. Sharp Memorial Community Hospital (San Diego), now Sharp HealthCare. She later was a blood bank supervisor at Bridgeport Hospital (Bridgeport, Conn.), returning to California as blood bank division manager at UC Irvine Medical Center (Orange)

A volunteer AABB assessor for many years, Lieta also helped plan annual meetings and scientific workshops, and was a quality consultant to AABB’s predecessor association. She chaired two America’s Blood Centers’ quality assurance committees and the California Blood Bank Society’s quality assurance and safety committee, and served on various taskforces and committees of the Clinical Laboratory Management Association’s California chapter. The former HIMSS member was twice elected president of the San Diego Organization of Healthcare Leaders, the San Diego chapter of the American College of Healthcare Executives. She also chaired the San Diego Women in Health Administration’s programs committee, and was vice president of the University of Irvine Healthcare Alumni SIG.

Co-author of numerous articles and abstracts—many on pretransfusion practices—in the Archives of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine (APLM), CAP Today, Clinical Leadership & Management Review and Transfusion, Lieta has also written, edited and co-edited several AABB blood transfusion textbooks, and shared her expertise on quality, productivity and problemsolving at conferences and seminars from coast to coast. Over the years, she has addressed:

  • ABC audiences on blood safety,  quality assurance, travel and collection errors
  • CBBS audiences on handling AABB inspections, EU plasma quality standards, donor incentives and compliance guidelines, and current pretransfusion testing trends
  • AABB Annual Meeting audiences on process redesign (“economic analysis of implementing technology”) and crossmatching problems
  • UCI Medical Center School of Medical Technology on blood banking
  • HIMSS on managing lab productivity challenges and time management
  • University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, Mich.) on current blood banking topics

Prior to earning an MBA from the University of California, Irvine, Lieta earned an associate of science degree from Southwestern Junior College (Chula Vista, Calif.), a bachelor of science degree from San Diego State University, a certificate in Clinical Laboratory Technology from Sharp Hospital’s School of Medical Technology (Summerlin Memorial Laboratory) and a Specialist in Blood Banking (SBB) certificate from SDBB.
