Randy German, MT(ASCP)SBB—Blood Bank and Laboratory Quality Manager, Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian (Newport Beach, Calif.)
During 22 years at Hoag, Randy has managed the Transfusion Service, hospital-based Blood Donor Center and Donor Processing Laboratory, and recently took on the added role of laboratory quality manager. Accomplishments include development of a house-wide, coordinated massive transfusion protocol, implementation of a laboratory information system, and collaboration on the development of OTIS-Blood Bank to track and trend biologic product deviations (BPDs). After FDA inspectors and AABB assessors called OTIS a “best practice” for process improvement, Randy decided to extend OTIS benefits by helping to develop OTIS-Laboratory to track and trend nonconforming events in the rest of the clinical laboratory outside of the Blood Bank. Prior to Hoag, he worked at Barnes Hospital (now Barnes-Jewish Hospital), Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center, Franciscan Medical Center, and a US Air Force Hospital in Georgia. He has published on error reduction and other topics in Transfusion and CBBS Today.
